Riding the River of Information Syndicate content

My name is Dave Sherohman and information is my life.

As a small child, I found it and learned it easily from the start. I was first introduced to programming in third grade, but a few more years passed before I was able to get my hands on a pair of language reference manuals which I absorbed over the course of a weekend and unlocked the full power (limited though it was) of Applesoft BASIC to manipulate and transform any information I cared to enter into the computers of the era.

In high school, I was active on many local BBSes (bulletin board systems), even running one of my own for a time, and began to wade in streams of information far beyond that which I could have ever before accessed so readily. Then came the Citadel-86 network, extending my reach across the country. I was no longer limited to working with my own information, but could get it from others as well.

College brought me to the shores of the raging river of Usenet news. There was no web as yet, and very little in the way of searchability, only a constant deluge of more information than anyone could hope to absorb more than the tiniest fraction of. It was time to learn to sift and channel the flow, picking out the interesting bits of information and letting the rest pass by.

Since then, the web, increased interactivity, blogging, user-created content, and, most recently, Twitter have amplified the volume of flowing data immeasurably, but the noise level has grown even more quickly than the solid signal of useful information. Google and other information management tools have arisen to combat this, providing an easier means for the world in general to find their desired signal among the noise, but general tools are rarely the best for handling specific cases, and so I press on, finding or building specific tools to find, manage, direct, or protect specific information, while also riding upon the river to see what and where it brings me.

This site will serve as a chronicle of my journey upon the river of information as well as a means of sharing some of the tools I create and information I discover. As I have made my living for the last four and a half years as a freelancer in this area, some business and freelancing information will probably appear as well, but most will be related to software or information handling in some way.

So come on in - the water's fine!
